We’ve Discovered a Thrill-Seeking Experience That Not Even The Bad Weather Can Ruin

It’s a craze that appears to be taking over the entire nation, with centers popping up in Sydney, Perth and the Gold Coast. Indoor skydiving seems to tick all the boxes when it comes to family fun these summer holidays and if you have a daredevil child who is a little too young to jump out of a plane just yet – this is sure to give them a much-needed adrenaline fix.

We caught up with Cheryl Dawson, iFLY’s National Marketing Manager and a highly-skilled indoor skydiver to uncover the craze.

How did the idea to open Australia’s first state-of-the-art indoor skydive center come about and how did you get involved?

Indoor skydiving was originally developed to allow experienced skydivers to train, whatever the weather. These days indoor skydiving has soared in popularity around the world and become an adventure sport in its own right. Indoor Skydive Australia Group Limited (ISA Group) was established by Wayne Jones and Daniel Hogan to bring world-class indoor skydiving facilities to Australia, New Zealand and South East Asian regions. These facilities, allowing human flight within a safe environment, are currently used by tourists, skydiving enthusiasts and military throughout the world.

I’ve always loved sport and adrenaline activities, so as soon as I tried indoor skydiving for the first time I was hooked. In 2016 I was fortunate enough to join the iFLY team after moving back to Sydney from the South Coast. I now fly every week, attend monthly events such as Ladies Night (my favourite!), and this year I competed at the 2018 Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships – a national competition where flyers from all over the country and even the world come together to fly. I can’t imagine working anywhere else now; I love my job and my favourite part is seeing people overcome adversity and learning to fly on their own.

What’s the appeal of skydiving indoors?

The appeal of indoor skydiving is that it’s suitable for all ages and abilities, there’s no limitation on the what you can learn, you can do it by yourself or in a team, and there’s no need to worry about bad weather or lengthy plane rides as you would for outdoor skydiving. It’s both a kids activity and an activity for seniors and it’s fully accessible which is quite incredible given the physical nature of flying and the perception of skydiving being a somewhat extreme activity.

Our new virtual reality technology is taking indoor skydiving to another level again with skydiving visuals now accompanying the physical motion of flying – this is the first of its kind in Australia and we can’t wait for everyone to try it.

Who can participate in a VR Indoor Skydiving session/who would this make a perfect gift for?

VR is suitable for ages 8+ which is fantastic for kids who still have a few more years before being able to do an outdoor tandem skydive.
VR is the perfect gift for thrill seekers, those who aren’t able to skydive for either fear of heights, planes or health issues, and for anyone who has thought about how cool it would be to skydive on their own or even BASE jump – which is pretty much considered the ultimate in extreme sports that takes years of skydiving practice before being able to even consider attempting it.

At the moment we’re offering virtual reality flights over Hawaii and the Swiss Alps, as well as a wingsuit BASE jump, so there’s something for everyone.

How long does each session last and what training is involved before you hop into the wind tunnel?

Each indoor skydiving flight is 50 seconds long, which is the same as the freefall part of a skydive from 14,000ft. The VR flights are slightly longer, around 1 minute 10 seconds, allowing time to jump out of the plane, helicopter or off the cliff!

Flight sessions work on 30-minute rotations, so you and your fellow flyers rotate between flights giving you a break in between and the chance to watch your mates flying.

The training and gear up process to indoor skydive takes around 20 minutes. You will watch a brief video on how the wind tunnel works and how to enter and exit the tunnel; then you will practice your body position and learn the hand signals that the instructor will use to communicate with you in the wind – with the loud tunnel and all that air flying by, using voice commands isn’t an option! If you’re someone with low vision, the instructor will work with you on some physical prompts, such as a tap on the top of the foot to indicate that you need to straighten your legs.

What’s the most amazing adrenaline-filled experience you’ve ever had on holiday?

I love rides and I love flying! I love going to theme parks and trying everything they have, and if there’s an indoor skydiving centre where I’m holidaying then you will absolutely find me there flying. I’ve also done a helicopter ride over an erupting volcano in Hawaii, that was pretty incredible.

Virtual Reality (VR) has arrived!

iFLY Indoor Skydiving Downunder, Australia’s largest facility for indoor skydiving, have introduced Virtual Reality as part of their experience offers, a revolutionary first for the Australian market.

“Virtual Reality is something we have been working towards introducing into our facilities for a long time”, comments ISAG National Marketing Manager Cheryl Dawson, “We have been waiting for the technology to become advanced enough that the experience replicates the skydiving experience perfectly, we are very excited with our new product”.

Virtual reality will allow users a real-world skydiving experience, without the need to jump from a plane or even wear a parachute.

“Our iFLY VR experience has skyrocketed our indoor skydiving offering to a whole new level. During our testing phase we had some of the country’s best skydivers using the product, with many commenting on its realism and how they felt like they were really flying outdoors!”

The iFLY VR Experience allows the user to watch POV skydiving footage on a specially designed VR helmet that takes the indoor skydiving experience outdoors.

“While you are in the safety of our wind tunnel, you will be watching mountains and even other skydivers fly by from 14,000 feet! It’s really quite incredible.”

The iFLY VR Experience combines the latest in VR technology with the state-of-the-art wind tunnel creating the most realistic skydiving experience ever offered in Australia.

iFLY VR package is now available at iFLY Downunder (Sydney West) to fly from 19th November 2018.

The technology will also land at iFLY Gold Coast and iFLY Perth by the end of the month, making it the hottest new product on the market this Christmas.

AIRWAX at iFLY Downunder

Greg Crozier and Karine Joly are team Airwax and have been skydiving for over 35 years between them and competing as a skydiving Freefly team for 10 years. Team mates in life and the sport of skydiving, they get to travel the world to share their love of human flight. Currently in Australia for the World Parachuting Championships on the Gold Coast earlier this month, the duo and their camera flyer Baptiste Welsch flew to victory taking the Gold Medal in the Freefly discipline. Freefly is like sky gymnastics and dance put together in a beautiful flowing routine and to make their performance extra special for the Australian competition, Airwax wore Aboriginal inspired jumpsuits that they designed and commissioned.

Greg and Karine are now at iFLY Downunder in Penrith to pass on some of their knowledge and skills to Australian skydivers and indoor skydivers. Their 3 day tunnel-camp teaches a range of ages and abilities to fly their bodies. Training in a wind tunnel allows skydivers to accomplish lots in a day without the plane ride or having to pack their parachutes. It also means coaches can give their students in-air instruction without also having to purchase a plane ticket as an added expense. Patrick Sullivan is the youngest athlete at 14 years old to join their camp. Patrick took 3rd place at the Junior Freestyle at the Australian Indoor Skydiving Championships in August and it’s great to see his flying being taken to the next level by these international superstars.

After their tunnel camp, Greg and Karine will take some time out to explore the Blue Mountains and Sydney, before jetting off to Alice Springs to skydive over Uluru and learn more about the Aboriginal culture that inspired their jumpsuits.

Event Wrap Up – 2018 Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships

By Holly Jaadla

I love the Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships. Now in its fourth year, I’ve had the pleasure of working at two and competing at two. The atmosphere starts building about five days before the event, people from all over the country are meeting up with fellow flying buddies they’ve not seen in a long time, teams are practising their routines and for some it’s the first time they’ve flown with their scratch team mates. For me that’s what it’s all about, giving it a go, it doesn’t matter if you’ve not entered a competition before or you don’t think you are good enough to win. At the other end of the scale are the top teams, incredibly talented and battling for the top spots and the chance to represent their country at an international level.

Day One saw the 4-Way FS Rookie (Blast) and A teams competing, alongside the 2-Way VFS Inter and Open. These are some of the biggest categories and see lots of scratch teams. It’s amazing to see so many mentors flying player/coach in these newbie teams. A particular shout out goes out to LG who competed in all four FS categories, one of those being with Rookie team ‘All My Spoons’ whose goal was to prove indoor skydiving has no boundaries when it comes to disability. Teammate Bek Cramp has mobility restrictions and has only been flying since December. A second ‘All Abilities’ team, quirkily named ‘7 Left Feet’ and featuring right-through-knee amputee Peter Pellegrini, took a silver medal in the same category.

Other comp pig nominations go out to Andrea Boerkamp, Mark “Stretch” Szulmayer and Russell Blackman who all competed in three 4-Way FS teams plus 2-Way VFS Inter (Head up), with Russell and Andrea bagging themselves a silver medal here too. I love the cross-discipline competitors, these guys are super talented all-rounders, Tanya Cale must get a mention here, part of four-time Australian Indoor Skydiving Championship team ‘Rotor Out’ and flying in the 2-Way VFS Inter and Open. Also to Gary Nemirovsky, standing on the podium for both 4-Way FS AAA and 2-Way Dynamic Intermediate. Ultimate comp pig award goes to Sarah Yates for competing in a whopping FIVE categories across three very different disciplines. Love your work, Sarah!

This year we saw a large contingent of WA flyers getting and what’s more impressive is they achieved podium positions in every category they flew in. Chief Judge Peta Holmes was representing the WA crowd for the judges and iFLY Perth General Manager, Dicey Bergic was event MC alongside the banter of Kellie Morrissey and Matt Boag (from Australia) from the Gold Coast. We were also lucky to have some very special international guests join us this year to join the artistic/dynamic panel – FAI AE Judge Ron Miasnikov (Israel) and the Soltyk family (Poland), featuring Andrzej (Team Vipers), OlaKasia and Krzysztof. If you missed it, you can catch all the action on the event livestream replays on our Facebook page.

Day One saw lots of high fives, smiles and a few brain farts! The day was a huge success and the perfect warm up for Day Two, which saw 4-Way FS AA and AAA, 4-Way VFS, Dynamic and Freestyle teams competing. The freestyle kids always attract the biggest cheers and this year was no different. We had three kids flying over from Perth, two from the Gold Coast and three home-grown Junior iFLYERS. We had superhero moves, gorilla-style chest beats, carving and beautiful ballet moves. In the Freestyle Open, Amy Watson wowed us with her technical, flowing and incredibly bendy moves, no surprise taking out the Gold. Newcomer Elise Brown has also been working hard over the past year and gave us a spectacular display of tunnel gymnastics. Amy and Elise will also be representing Australia at the 3rd FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving in Bahrain later this year. A special shout out to Patrick Sullivan who learned the Freestyle compulsories the day before his comp, enabling him to enter the Junior Freestyle Open category. Awesome work!

The FS teams on Day Two were launching from the door which added extra complexity to their dives and well as having more moves to remember and perform in each round. What always baffles me is the slot swapping, from the start to the finish of the round. It was a close battle between previous AAA champions ‘Rotor Out’ and team ‘Kinetix’, with just three points separating them after Round 10. An even close battle took place in the AA with team ‘Stetchy McStretch Face’ beating team ‘What’s the Point’ onto the podium by just one point. Congratulations to ‘Smokin’ Darts, Breakin’ Hearts’ taking the gold here – we want to see you lads in the AAA next year!

I was pleasantly surprised we had five 4-Way VFS teams this year. Team Focus showing us why they deserve a place on a world stage with a staggering 248 points over 10 rounds in the VFS Open event. They also set a new Australian Indoor record of 32 points in Round. In the VFS Advanced event, it was awesome to see three teams that had really put in some hard work to prepare. Team ‘Block Party’ had been extremely dedicated to their training and it showed. A special shout out to Jacob Mulder from the ‘ADFPA Frothy Dawgs’, who only mastered head down a few months prior.

Dynamic is a category we’ve been trying to grow for the past five years of operation, but it also takes a lot of skill before you can jump in and just give it a go. We had eight 2-Way teams flying over the Inter and Open. It was the battle of the Instructors in the open with Kyle Chick and Jimmy Cooper shredding their way to the top spot, incredible to watch and too fast to photograph! Junior iFLYER’s James Dehombre and Jordan Bassett-Smith winning Gold in the Inter, these guys have been a dedicated and humble team from the start and they deserved to be standing in the top spot. Not only that, but they also gave the 4-way Dynamic a crack and as there was only an open category, they put on a great show. Instructor team ‘Down to Fly’ getting a perfect score here, as well as setting a new Australian record for fastest speed round! These guys are keen to grow this discipline so hit them up for some coaching and we can see you competing here next year.
